How the MCS-150 schedule works
Every motor carrier with a USDOT number must update its MCS-150 every 24 months, even if nothing changed (49 CFR 390.19). Your number decides when:
- Month: the last digit. A number ending in 1 files in January, through 9 for September, and 0 for October.
- Year: the next-to-last digit. Odd digits file in odd-numbered years; even digits in even-numbered years.
- Deadline: the last day of that month. A filing in the 12 months before counts.
Example: USDOT 123456 → last digit 6 (June), next-to-last digit 5(odd) → due by June 30 of every odd-numbered year. FMCSA's own example: USDOT 1234521 updates in January of even-numbered years.

How do I know when my MCS-150 is due?
Your USDOT number sets the deadline. The last digit is the month (a number ending in 1 files in January, through 9 for September, and 0 for October). The next-to-last digit sets the year: odd digits file in odd-numbered years, even digits in even-numbered years. The update is due by the last day of that month, every 24 months (49 CFR 390.19T).
Do I have to file if nothing changed?
Yes. The biennial update is required even when your company details, fleet and mileage are the same. Filing confirms your record is current.
How much does it cost to update the MCS-150?
Nothing. You can update your MCS-150 free on the FMCSA Portal. Companies that charge to file it for you are not FMCSA, and you never need to pay one.
What happens if I miss my MCS-150 deadline?
FMCSA can deactivate your USDOT number and assess civil penalties. A deactivated number can stop you from operating until the update is filed.
Can I file my MCS-150 early?
Yes. An update filed in the 12 months before your deadline counts toward it.
